How Challenged Was Education in the Past?

By Claudette Thea Binondo

Although education has always been recognized as a critical essential for Filipinos, it has always since been challenged over the past. The Philippines, as a country, sees education as its one of the top priorities. It sees education as a right and a need of the Filipino Children. It is natural that members of the education sector seek effort to deliver quality education but have always had some  challenges in bridging the gaps between delivering education itself and its capabilities as a developing country.

Before, the lack of schools in rural areas was one of the challenges that the Philippines faced. The Reason for this is because those who study education pursue professional opportunities in the city. Leaving rural areas with the issue of the lack of passionate educators for many children. Which is quite understandable for teachers who also have a need of meeting their basic necessities. Yet it is depressing to think that education in these areas would depend on occasional programs, donations and even the teacher’s salary in order to provide materials for students.

Other than these issues, Teachers in the past have also been challenged by the lack of many points, particularly low pay. The Education Sector has these funds that, somehow, cannot cover and recover all matters regarding education. Although there are allocated funds for teachers in public and private schools, the budgetary allowances are not conditioned regularly. Delays in pay make it hard for teachers to budget their salaries monthly to be contented with their professional state then and comfortable living now.

Adapting to Online Learning Post COVID-19 Pandemic

By: Meisha Mrielle Baliong and Mikha Angela Javines

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about a significant shift in the education sector, with a rapid transition from traditional classrooms to online learning. This shift has posed numerous challenges, including widespread school closures, disruption of traditional education practices, and increased need for online and distance learning. However, it has also presented opportunities for innovation and transformation in education. As educators and students adapt to online learning, it is essential to focus on creating engaging and inclusive learning experiences that cater to diverse needs and abilities.

The transition to online and distance learning has been marked by the adoption of hybrid and blended learning models, combining in-person and online instruction. Educators have also leveraged technologies like AI and data analytics to develop personalized and adaptive learning approaches. Gamification and game-based learning have also been used to engage and motivate students in virtual settings. Despite these innovations, educators have faced challenges in adapting teaching methods to virtual environments, maintaining student engagement and participation, and providing effective feedback and assessment in online settings.

One of the significant challenges in online learning is ensuring student engagement and participation. Educators have had to rethink their teaching methods to accommodate virtual classrooms, where students may feel disconnected from their peers and instructors. To address this, educators have used various strategies, such as live streaming, video conferencing, and online discussions, to create interactive and immersive learning experiences. Additionally, educators have used digital tools to facilitate collaboration and teamwork among students, promoting a sense of community and social connection.

Another critical aspect of online learning is providing effective feedback and assessment. Educators have had to adapt their assessment methods to accommodate virtual settings, where traditional methods may not be feasible. To address this, educators have used digital tools, such as online quizzes, assignments, and exams, to assess student learning. Additionally, educators have used video conferencing and live streaming to provide feedback and support to students, ensuring that they receive timely and constructive feedback.

As we move forward, it is crucial to build on the insights gathered from the pandemic experience to shape a resilient and dynamic educational framework. This framework should prioritize inclusivity, engagement, and the effective use of technology to enhance learning experiences. By doing so, we can create a post-pandemic education system that is better equipped to meet the needs of students, educators, and communities. Ultimately, adapting to online learning post-COVID pandemic requires a collaborative effort to ensure that education remains accessible, equitable, and effective for all.

In conclusion, the COVID-19 pandemic has presented both challenges and opportunities for education. As educators and students adapt to online learning, it is essential to focus on creating engaging and inclusive learning experiences that cater to diverse needs and abilities. By leveraging technologies, rethinking teaching methods, and prioritizing inclusivity and engagement, we can create a post-pandemic education system that is better equipped to meet the needs of students, educators, and communities. As we move forward, it is crucial to continue innovating and transforming education to ensure that it remains relevant, effective, and accessible for all.

And yet the question stands on whether or not we are still adjusting to the new ways of learning since 2022. Although the adoption has been going on for a while now, and many have most likely adjusted to it, there are still some who have not found their inkling with this new normal we have going on. The sudden shift probably has to have an impact on our adjustment. This shift caused a pausing moment within us that hindered everything. Even in this year where we have gone back to the normalcy of what used to be pre-pandemic, a lot has changed, and much has to be taken in.

In the eyes of education, online learning is not a new concept, and many schools have most likely used it as a form of system. During the pandemic, it was introduced to the masses to reduce the risks of COVID-19 and to implement social distancing. What used to be a place for studying and learning, it has merged itself into the internet that people often relate back to social media and entertainment of the like, and while this change brought a positive result, it also had its negatives.

The positives of this new normal brought so many opportunities on the table to use the internet as a medium to teach students. Not a new thing as tutorials and tutors have happened way long into the past already, but bringing it to the public and having many experiences. This skyrocketed the boost for new sites and apps to involve education into their system. These many options allowed the teachers to involve new teaching styles, and strategies of the like, while students used these systems to study even more.

On the negatives of this, many can find a backway to complete their works through a simple search. Not only that, it also does not guarantee if a student is learning or not with how easy it is to find answers on the internet. Teachers will not be able to watch over their students during exam seasons, which gives an unfairness to those who were honest with their answers and preferring to study.

Post-pandemic you can already see the effects of this hybrid learning system in the students and teachers themselves. Those who have properly learned can still catch up to the lessons, remembering the terms used and the instructions alike, while those who didn’t find it harder to catch up. You may argue that maybe some are slow to catch up to the studies having suddenly changed from the full online to a hybrid set up, but all things considered, even those who are slow to catch up will eventually remember those terms and relearn those instructions as they have previously done it before. Teachers have also begun showing their mistrust within their students, reminding them that they’ll know if they didn’t study, causing a rift that hinders a bond that could have been made with the reliance of a bond.

And yet these are just factors that circulate on the question. No one truly knows for sure, and all answers are subjective to the person who is being asked. Some may agree, and some may not, but it is all ignorant to think that nothing has changed at all, and that everything we’ve experienced was but a blip into our long existence, because even if it was only a couple of years – it affected all of us.

Challenges Faced by Teachers in the Current Generation

By: Kenneth Loro

In today’s rapidly evolving educational landscape, teachers encounter a multitude of challenges that significantly impact their professional lives and effectiveness in the classroom. The integration of technology, the diversity of student needs, mental health concerns, administrative burdens, and varying expectations from parents and communities all contribute to a complex teaching environment. Understanding these challenges is crucial to developing effective strategies for support and improvement.

One of the most pressing challenges is the integration of technology into the classroom. While digital tools can enhance learning, many teachers feel overwhelmed by the pace of change and the need to continuously update their skills. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, particularly for those who may not have had extensive training in technology use. Consequently, teachers may struggle to effectively engage students, impacting their overall teaching efficacy and job satisfaction.

Diversity in student learning needs presents another significant hurdle. Classrooms today are more heterogeneous than ever, with students coming from varied cultural, linguistic, and socio-economic backgrounds. Teachers are tasked with differentiating instruction to accommodate these diverse needs, which can be time-consuming and challenging. When teachers feel ill-equipped to meet these demands, it can lead to frustration and a sense of isolation, further contributing to burnout.

Mental health is an increasingly critical concern among educators. The stress of managing classrooms, meeting academic standards, and supporting students' emotional well-being can be overwhelming. Many teachers report high levels of anxiety and fatigue, which can affect their performance and, by extension, their students’ learning experiences. This cycle of stress and burnout can lead to higher turnover rates, ultimately disrupting the continuity of education for students.

To help teachers overcome these challenges, several strategies can be implemented. First, providing ongoing professional development focused on technology integration and inclusive teaching practices is essential. This training can empower teachers with the necessary skills and confidence to adapt to new tools and diverse student needs. Additionally, schools should prioritize mental health resources, offering counseling and wellness programs to support educators in managing stress and maintaining work-life balance.

Creating collaborative networks within the educational community can also foster a supportive environment. Mentorship programs and peer support groups allow teachers to share experiences, strategies, and emotional support, reducing feelings of isolation. Streamlining administrative tasks through efficient processes can further free up teachers’ time for instruction and student engagement. Lastly, fostering strong partnerships with parents and the community can help align expectations and create a more supportive atmosphere for both teachers and students.

In conclusion, the challenges faced by teachers today are significant and multifaceted, impacting their professional lives and the quality of education. By addressing these issues through targeted support, training, and community involvement, we can create an environment where teachers feel valued and empowered to thrive. Ultimately, this will benefit not only educators but also the students they serve, leading to improved educational outcomes.

A Filipino Christmas: Traditions and Heartwarming Stories

The Anticipation of Christmas

In the Philippines, Christmas carols and decorations start popping up as soon as September hits. This early celebration, known as the "Ber" months, signals the anticipation of the festive season. Malls, streets, and homes are decorated with Christmas lights, colorful lanterns called "parols", and extravagant Christmas trees.

"As the weeks pass, the excitement intensifies, I start to notice the small changes around me the twinkling lights that brighten the street, the Christmas songs of Jose Mari Chan playing in each houses and seeing children eagerly running around singing and excitedly saying "mamasko po!". Each day feels like a step closer to something magical, and I often find myself anticipating for more.

"Noche Buena is the highlight of our celebration, a night where every effort is made for family members to return home and be together. It's a time to reconnect and share in the joy of the season. Our tradition extends beyond the dinner table as we make it a point to give back. Each year, we prepare food for the homeless, embodying the spirit of generosity and compassion. This simple act reminds us that Christmas is about spreading love and helping those in need."

Anime-Inspired Food Spot in Davao City: Jaegers Café

By: Mehaila Bernasor, Raiza Ramirez

A new day for a new endeavor --- or rather a new adventure.

Amidst the rising heat of October sun, nothing like a cup of cold coffee or sip of milk tea could do the perfect trick of relieving humidity. Hanging out in a cafe, sitting in the corner, and enjoying the atmosphere with a book on hand--- how blissful.  Good aesthetics with a maintained atmosphere? Enough to create safe space and peace for everyone. With the rise of cafés all over town, not all suits all. Simplicity is fine but unique attacks of upgrades are better.

Ramen, Katsu, and Japanese Curry! At Jaegers Café, anime lovers and foodies alike can step into a world where their favorite anime characters come to life while enjoying authentic Japanese flavors. From the moment our team entered, we were surrounded by vibrant murals, action figures, and cozy seating that felt straight out of an anime episode. The menu featured iconic Japanese dishes, and we eagerly ordered Natsu's Katsu (Japanese Fried Pork Cutlets), Mozuya's Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken), Naruto's Special Ramen (Shoyu Tonkotsu Ramen), and more.

The dishes exceeded our expectations. The Natsu's Katsu was crispy and perfectly fried, enhanced by a flavorful dipping sauce that complemented the crunchy texture. Other members of the team raved about their choices too. Naruto's Special Ramen had springy noodles and a rich shoyu broth, while Mozuya's Karaage was an explosion of flavor, served with shredded cabbage and a tangy sauce. Drinks like the Winter Sakura Milk Tea, with its delicate floral notes, added a refreshing finish. Jaegers Café is more than just a dining experience—it’s a nostalgic, immersive trip into anime culture, with a delicious Japanese twist in every bite.

Jaeger's Café: A Haven for Anime Enthusiasts and Creative Connections

The general vibes of the cafe is what one would expect of a place with an anime theme to it; popular culture from Japan and all things nerdy like anime, manga, video games, toys and cosplay! In that regard, it’s pretty much up my alley since I do consider myself a nerd who enjoys all this stuff.

I really do love the fact that it’s the whole culture/lifestyle that attracts folks like myself to this cafe. You hear friends at the next table talking about their favorite scenes from a popular anime or manga series, the Mecha(giant robot) fans assembling their Gundam figures, some folks uttering a few phrases they hear in an anime, the gamers playing JRPGs(Japanese Role Playing Games) on their Nintendo Switches.

If you’re one to nerd out a bit in a place like this, then you’d pretty much feel at home!

In a city brimming with cafés, Jaeger's stands out as a place where anime lovers can find more than just a meal—it's a home for creativity, connection, and fun. Whether you're savoring the rich flavors of Japanese-inspired dishes or simply enjoying the vibrant atmosphere filled with your favorite characters, Jaeger's Café isn't just another stop for food and drinks. It's a destination where memories are made, laughter fills the air, and the culture of anime comes alive. So whether you're an otaku at heart or a curious first-timer, one visit will have you craving more of this unique, lively experience.

As the sun beat down on us, we set out to find a ride. The streets were swarming with people and vehicles, but we eventually spotted the perfect solution: a spacious jeepney that could accommodate our group of five. We waited for a few more passengers to join us, and then we were off.     The busy roads were a labyrinth of winding paths, filled with the deafening roar of traffic and the bitter stench of exhaust. Navigating this maze was a challenge, a constant struggle against the relentless tide of vehicles.     Fortunately, the company of our friends helped to distract us from the chaos. We engaged in lively conversations, sharing laughter and stories. The journey seemed to fly by, and before we knew it, we had arrived at our destination. Filled with excitement we stepped into Jaeger’s cafe and it felt like stepping into the pages of our favorite manga. The restaurant's interior was a vibrant explosion of anime culture, with walls adorned with murals of iconic characters and shelves lined with collectible action figures. The seating area featured cozy booths and comfortable chairs that invited you to relax and enjoy the atmosphere.     In a whole new level of cafés in the battleground, Jaeger's Cafe stood out with its distinctive Anime theme captivating the attention of many resident otaku's of Davao City. Starting the journey with the café's catchy exterior and unique interior are walls covered with framed photos and hanging scroll canvases of anime characters together with a manga inspired wall.
